Warm welcome for Royal Marines at Deal Castle

Six Royal Marine Commandos taking part in an extraordinary challenge to celebrate the 350th birthday of the force, visited Deal Castle yesterday (Monday).

The men were led by the Band of HM Royal Marines Portsmouth along The Strand in Walmer and into the castle at 4pm.

They have already skied 1664km across Norway, sailed 1664km to Spain, cycled 1664km through France and kayaked across the English Channel.

They are now running approximately 20 miles a day and will continue to do so until Friday, July 25 when they reach 1664km in London.

Taking a well deserved break, they enjoyed a reception within the Tudor style building, while the band prepared to perform on the promenade.

The remarkable challenge is being undertaken in order to inform people of the three-and-a-half centuries of unbroken service in protecting and promoting the nation’s security, prosperity and reputation; both at home and overseas.

They are raising money for the Royal Marines Charitable Trust Fund.
