Romanian doctor Ioan Boila walks free from court after depraved videos found in car boot

A Romanian A&E doctor – on his way to Britain register for a job with the NHS – was found to be carrying depraved movies with him.

And in the boot of his car, which was stopped at Dover Eastern Docks, officers discovered videos depicting appalling sex acts involving animals – together with child sex images on a USB and hard drive.

But last night 56-year-old dad-of-one Dr Ioan Boila walked from court after receiving a sentence which allowed him his immediate freedom.

He was arrested four years ago when officers discovered the external hard drive found in a bag in his car was password protected and encrypted.

After lengthy forensic examinations it was found to contain films depicting the mutilation of animals for sexual gratification and child sex.

Boila had already jumped bail and only returned to the UK last November after the National Crime Agency successfully obtained a European Arrest Warrant.

The doctor has spent the past four months on remand after admitting five sex offences.

But now a judge at Canterbury Crown Court has given him a four-month jail sentence for the offences, which means he is free because of time served.

Boila initially denied his “collection” was illegal in Romania – but later claimed he had the pictures and videos for “research purposes”.

Judge James O’Mahony was told that the doctor’s career was “in tatters” and he now plans to return to Romania.

The court had heard at an earlier hearing how the doctor was stopped on January 2013 and told officials he was coming to the UK to get a job.

His car was searched and Border Force officers found five VHS videos, two DVDs and four CDs stashed near the spare wheel.

Boila told them: “Mine, they are friends, nothing.”

He added that the items had been stashed in the car, which he had bought from a man in Bucharest, so his wife wouldn’t find them.

But the doctor added: “The people who do this should be shot....no paedophilia. Dominant women I like.”

Judge O’Mahony said: “I think it’s accepted that he is a doctor of medicine and there may be factual disagreements about certain aspects of the case and he certainly said things when he was arrested which raised the eyebrows as far as the prosecution is concerned.

“But he is of previous good character and has a wife and a daughter in Romania and is assessed (by the probation service) of posing a low risk of reoffending.

“And no matter how horrific these items are and no matter how serious it is, because it’s real children who were involved in the indecent images, but it seems that the proper course would be to impose a sentence which will allow his immediate release, according to (sentencing) guidelines.

As he left the dock, he put his hand on his heart and thanked the judge.

An NSPCC spokesman said: "Boila's horrific crimes were made all the worse by his cowardly attempt to flee justice.

“Every time someone watches one of these vile videos they create more demand for paedophiles to hurt children.

"We welcome the police's commitment to making him face up to his appalling crimes."

“Ioan Boila was in possession of some truly horrific material, including films involving child abuse and the mutilation of animals" - Richard Bowen

Richard Bowen, from the NCA’s Dover border investigations team, said: “Ioan Boila was in possession of some truly horrific material, including films involving child abuse and the mutilation of animals.

“The fact that he wanted to come to the UK to practise as a doctor makes it even more chilling.

“He thought he could escape by returning to Romania and refusing to answer bail, but working with the Romanian authorities we were able to get him arrested and extradited back to the UK.”

Paul Morgan, Director of Border Force South East and Europe said: “My officers are there to protect our borders against individuals who seek to bring in illegal material such as this.

"We will continue to work closely with law enforcement agencies such as the NCA to ensure that action is taken against those involved.”
