Dover Health Centre displays 'offensive' sign turning away gay men

An NHS trust has apologised after a health centre displayed an "offensive" notice turning away gay men.

Blogger Jayce Carberry, 24, from Ramsgate, was made aware of the issue by a friend who was waiting to be seen in Dover Health Centre.

The clinic, in Maison Dieu Road, had a sign stating that patients who had been sexually assaulted, who are male and have sex with men, or sex workers could not be tested there.

The poster, which has now been removed, offered no reason, and gave a number for alternative services.

Mr Carberry tested HIV positive in 2012. His website offers people the insight into his life with the condition.

He said: “The sign, while offensive and discriminatory, has uncovered a much larger issue.

“I received a phone call on Monday from Kent County Council, asking for a meeting next Monday to discuss this matter further and put together a plan of action.”

His most recent posts from last week show a picture of the sign, and Mr Carberry’s view that it is “offensive”.

In his blog, he said: “The fact that Dover and the surrounding towns and villages do not have an adequate sexual health provision is for me, the biggest problem at hand.

“This, for me, and for many across Kent, is the point. The wording of the sign is offensive and discriminatory, but in the bigger picture, irrelevant. It’s the fact there is a policy behind it.”

Ruth Herron, assistant director sexual health services for Kent Community Health NHS Trust, and Andrew Scott-Clark, interim director for Kent County Council, said: “Our sexual health clinics across Kent adhere to the British Association for Sexual Health & HIV (BASHH) guidelines that men who have sex with men and sex workers should be offered full screening and treatment at a tier-three GUM clinic.

“We deeply regret that the sign intended to explain this has caused offence.

“Staff put the sign up in response to feedback from clients who had waited for an appointment only to be told that they needed a service at another site.

“They are upset to have caused offence as they pride themselves on a friendly and non-judgmental welcome for all members of the community.”
