Renault Clio goes through fence at Langdon Cliffs, Dover, police and coastguards called.

This was the dramatic scene after a car ploughed through a fence at Dover’s cliffs.

The Renault Clio ended up at the bottom of a steep slope and tipped with its nose on a footpath just below.

Had it gone further it would have fallen down a sheer drop.

Yet the driver, a man in his 30s, escaped with only minor injuries.

The drama happened at the Langdon section of the White Cliffs of Dover just before 8am today (Monday).

It was close to the first parking bay at Langdon Cliffs, overlooking Dover Eastern Docks.

Police, fire and ambulance service and coastguards all rushed to the scene.

Sam Sinclair, Marine and Coastguard Agency spokesman, said: “Kent Police requested UK Coastguard assistance at an incident involving a car on a cliff edge at Langdon Cliffs.

“Langdon, Deal and Folkestone coastguard rescue teams were sent to the location.

Using their rope rescue techniques the coastguard rescue teams managed to stabilise the vehicle and it was later winched away from the ledge.”

It is not yet known what caused this near-disaster.

A Kent Police spokesman said: “We cannot comment on the exact circumstances.”

The victim’s exact injuries could also not be confirmed.

But Richard Airey, spokesman for South East Coast Ambulance Service, said: “One ambulance car attended the scene.

"The man was assessed and treated before being taken to Buckland Hospital in Dover.”

Kent Fire and Rescue Service were there to check that the area was safe.
