Port of Dover hands over cheque for £250k to kick-start community fund

Christmas came early for Dovorians today when the Port of Dover handed over a cheque for £250,000 to launch the community fund.

Chairman of the port, George Jenkins presented the cheque in Dover’s Market Square to the Rev Trevor Willmott.

Mr Wilmott is the independent community fund panel and The Lady Colgrain, the chairman of trustees of the Kent Community Foundation is providing administrative support.

The first round of funding is planned to open from the middle of January 2015 and close on March 31, 2015 with the first awards being finalised in early June.

The concept of a community fund was introduced in April by Stephen Hammond, the transport minister at the time.

The fund aims to create a close bond between the community and the port through investment.

Chief executive of the port, Tim Waggott said: “I am absolutely delighted to present the cheque for £250,000 as a real and visible sign of our commitment to our community.

“This kick starts the Port of Dover Community Fund which will see an ongoing tangible and significant contribution to supporting learning, education and skills as well as enriching the social, cultural and environmental life of local communities.

On receiving the cheque, Mr Willmott added: “It is not just money. It is a pledge to help bring hope to young people and to the community of Dover. A great day!”

MP Charlie Elphicke attended along with the deputy town mayor Cllr Sue Jones. Chairman of the Dover Society Derek Leach also came along.

Christmas carols “filled the air” and the public were able to indulge in festive drinks and mince pies.
