Cross Channel ferry heading to Dover runs aground at Port of Calais

A cross Channel ferry with more than 300 passengers on board has run aground near the Port of Calais.

The P&O vessel Pride of Kent was heading to Dover when it happened early yesterday afternoon. It will remain out of service until repairs have been completed in Dunkirk.

The company has confirmed that an investigation has taken place and none of those on board were injured.

Today a spokesman said: "Further to yesterday's incident on the Pride of Kent we can confirm that a full investigation has been initiated into the causes of the grounding. We shall be working closely with all relevant authorities in Britain and France.

"The ship will be out of service until repairs have been completed."

During the incident yesterday he said: "There are no reports of injuries, the ship is now afloat and we are hoping to transfer our passengers to an alternative ship as soon as possible."

It is understood to have happened in high winds and the vessel is believed to have collided with a walkway.

Work took place to move all of the passengers onto another boat so they could continue their journey to Kent.

Earlier, the Port of Calais was closed due to bad weather.

Yesterday evening DFDS Seaways services between Dover and Calais faced delays of up to 90 minutes as a result of the earlier incident.
