They arrived within minutes of the 999 call and put out a small fire, involving rubbish in the ground floor of the building, using a hose reel.

They speedily wiped out the flames and ended up being at the scene for less than 15 minutes.

The cause of this fire is not yet confirmed.

But 12 houses in Randolph Road are disused and boarded up and arsonists torched a bedroom in one on March 5, gathering rubbish and setting it alight.

Neighbours had said that the area attracted anti-social behaviour and firefighters had feared that they would be called back.

Crew manager Adrian Hawkins, from Dover Fire Station, then said that people had managed to get through the security grilles broken into the buildings and started destroying them.

He said that there had previously been fires in the gardens.

Families had been moved out of these houses in January 2015 after the Riverside Group housing association announced that the NHS had not renewed its lease on the buildings.

They are behind Buckland Hospital and were handed back to the East Kent Hospitals University NHS Foundation Trust (EKHUFT), which is responsible for the new £24 million hospital.

The trust said it had secured the properties with metal shutters to protect against risks such as vandalism and squatters, and also carries out regular security checks.
