Lorry driver from Dover held after 'illegal immigrants' found in back of truck on A1 in Cambridgeshire

A Kent lorry driver has been arrested after 26 suspected illegal immigrants were found in the back of his vehicle.

The 54-year-old from Dover was detained after the lorry, which is thought to have travelled from France, was stopped on the A1 in Cambridgeshire near Stamford.

The group in the lorry are thought to be from Iran, Iraq, Turkey and Syria.

They have all been detained for immigration offences.

A spokesman for Cambridgeshire police said: "We received information from Hertfordshire police this morning... of about 30 possible immigrants in the back of a French lorry, travelling north on the M11.

"Officers have stopped a lorry on the A1 northbound near to the junction with the B1081. About 27 people have been detained by police.

"The driver of the lorry has been arrested on suspicion of facilitating immigration."
