White Cliffs lift linking East Cliff street and Dover Castle dropped by Dover Society

Plans for a lift up the Cliffs of Dover now won’t get off the ground.

But the idea if a cable car connecting the town and castle are still possible.

The Dover Society has given up the idea of fitting a passenger lift linking the Castle with East Cliff after it was dismissed by English Heritage.

The civic group’s chairman Derek Leach explained to Kent Online: “We are not following up the lift idea as English Heritage does not think that it would be allowed on the White cliffs.”

However a cable car is still a possibility, Dover District Council has confirmed.

Spokesman Kevin Charles told Kent Online: “We are still looking for a visionary way of linking the castle to the town centre.”

The idea is included in the authority’s corporate plan for 2016-20 and last year it confirmed that interested parties were developing a business case to take it forward.

For many years the idea of a cable car has been discussed, and a £4 million bid to link the castle, town centre and possibly the Western Heights was submitted in 2008.

It is not yet know how much the cable car project would cost in all.
