They are now trying to find out what was behind this.

A spokesman said: “Kent Police was called at 11.37am to reports that two handguns had been found, by cleaners, discarded inside a bin in communal toilets on board the Spirit of Britain shortly after it had arrived at the Port of Dover from Calais.

“They have been safely removed by police and an investigation has been launched.”

A P&O Ferries spokesman said: “We can confirm that two firearms were found on board one of our ferries on arrival in Dover on Saturday morning.

“The police were called and immediately removed the items.

“We will continue to liaise closely with the relevant authorities in regard to security arrangements at the ports at which we operate and will of course act on any suggestions they make to ensure the safety of our passengers.”
