Lithuanian lorry driver jailed for trying to smuggle woman into UK via Dover

By Paul Hooper

A lorry driver caught trying to smuggle a woman into the UK claimed he did it "because she was pretty".

Egidijus Zakanauskas said the 27-year-old "attractive" stranger had contacted him in Dunkirk saying she was called "Diana" and asking for a lift.

The married 29-year-old Lithuanian later told Border Force officers at Dover he realised "her story didn't ring true" but still agreed to stash her in his cab in February.

The men were arrested as part of an operation targeting suspected illegal working within the construction industry. Stock picture

He has now been jailed for a year after admitting the offence at Canterbury Crown Court.
