The tragedy had happened when the dual carriageway remained shut following a four-vehicle crash a couple of hours earlier.

It happened a few hundred yards south of the bridge and involved one lorry and three cars.

Kent Police were called to this at 3.54pm.

Officers along with Kent Fire and Rescue Service and the South East Coast Ambulance Service attended the scene where injuries were reported.

The road was closed while vehicles were recovered, leading to traffic holdups and car, van and lorry drivers trying to find alternative routes.

Vehicles heading for Dover Eastern Docks and the town centre formed a long queue up Castle Hill Road, for example.

Police now say that the tragedy lead to Jubliee Way having to be closed in both directions for longer and the route was not reopened until 9.45pm.
