Charlie Elphicke, MP, to unveil plan to keep Banksy Brexit mural in Dover

Dover’s MP will tomorrow (Friday) reveal plans to save the town’s Banksy artwork and keep it in the town.

The owners of the building it is on say it is due to be demolished.

The Godden family say they want to preserve the mural and sell if for charity but that could take it out of the town.

He said: “The Dover Banksy is an iconic artwork. Our town is the gateway and guardian of the nation – and on the frontline of Brexit. Dover is the Banksy’s rightful home.

"To demolish it would be a crime against culture.

“The people of Dover want it to stay – and so do I.

"Please lend me your support on Friday at noon, where I will be setting out my plans to save our Banksy.”

The mural has attracted worldwide interest since it suddenly appeared on May 7.

It shows a workman on a ladder chipping away at one of the stars of the EU flag, clearly signifying Brexit.

It is on the A20 so can be seen by every driver there as they head towards Dover Eastern Docks to catch a ferry to the Continent.

Just this Monday Dover District Council’s cabinet agreed to look into ways of keeping the mural in the town as a tourism asset.
