Public feedback on new Dover district leisure centre to be heard at council meeting next week

Latest public feedback on plans for Dover's £26.4 million leisure centre will be heard next week.

The district council's Dover leisure centre project advisory group will hear comments at its meeting on Thursday, April 6.

The planning application was submitted on March 14 and the group will hear comments both from local residents and statutory bodies.

Groups such as water companies and the county highways department are invited to give views on applications/

This is so they can say if they believe that a planned project is workable from their perspectives.

This scheme is expected to go before the district council's planning committee in June and if approval is given, construction would begin in October.

Dover District Council has released new images of the centre for the entire district, which will be in Whitfield and is due to open in early 2019.

The centre is to be on a 2.1 hectare site, to provide the only lane-swimming pool in the district.

It will have an eight-lane competition standard pool with spectator seating for 250.

It will also include a learner pool with movable floor, four-court sports hall, squash courts, gym, fitness studios, clip and climb wall, and a cafe.

Externally there will be 3G artificial pitches and at least 250 parking spaces.

The new centre will replace the existing Dover Leisure Centre in Townwall Street, which opened in 1976 and is becoming too expensive to maintain in the long term.

The leisure centre project advisory group is there so that all councillors can be consulted before the scheme is decided on by the cabinet.

It helps the cabinet in areas such as background information and research and advises the senior councillors on the project.
