Lifeboat crews from Dover and Walmer are searching the sea off St Margaret's at Cliffe for a body.
The boats were launched after a passenger on board a cross channel ferry raised the alarm after seeing what they thought might be somebody floating in the water.
The crews went into action shortly after 2pm and are still at sea almost hours later.
A member of the Dover Coastguard team said the sea search was continuing but that the floating object was not confirmed to be a body
