Birmingham shooting murder suspect arrested trying to board ferry in Dover

A man has been arrested on suspicion of a murder as he tried to board a ferry in Kent - following a shooting near Birmingham.

The 23-year-old suspect was held as he tried to jump on the vessel at the Port of Dover overnight.

He was wanted after a 22-year-old man was found dying in a car on Maxwell Avenue in Handsworth, a suburb of Birmingham, just before 5pm yesterday.

Police could do nothing to save him and he died at the scene.

The suspect was with a woman, also aged 23, who has been arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender.

The pair, who are from Birmingham, are in police custody in the Kent and will be brought to the West Midlands for questioning.

The victim has not yet been named.

His family are being supported by specially trained officers.

Detective Inspector Warren Hines, who is leading the investigation, said: "We have had an overwhelming amount of information from members of the local community which has enabled some really swift progress to be made with this investigation.
