Plans to build 65 new homes in Dover gone in for planning approval

Extensive plans to build 65 new homes in Charlton Green have been submitted and await approval from planning officers.

A planning application, lodged on Monday, shows a vision to create 23 homes and 42 self-contained flats with 77 parking spaces, vehicular and pedestrian access, garden and open space areas.

It will require the eventual demolition of the Old Sorting Office, which currently houses The Weights Room, a gym that is popular with people all over the district.

Director Simon Darton said he has seen the details and confirmed that his business will be moving to a bigger location in the Charlton Centre, on the high street, at some point this year.

An exact date has not been confirmed.

Mr Darton said: “We have the boxing club, they will all come with us and the new building is four times bigger.

“I would have been there a year ago if we could have pushed it.”

He previously told the Mercury that the land needs to be sold first, for a proposed £1.8 million.

The gym has a six month rolling lease, which can be extended until plans are approved to demolish the existing premises.

The site has been identified for development in the district council’s Land Allocations Local Plan (LALP) since its adoption in January 2015.

Consideration has been given that the development will be opposite the Charlton Green conservation area, and the Grade II* listed St Peter and St Paul’s Church.

An application statement said: “That frontage development provides many cues that have influenced the design of the new development that aims to improve the urban design of the area to the benefit of the heritage assets.

The modern-style development would include 20 one-bedroom flats, 32 with two bedrooms, 11 with three bedrooms, and two four-bedroom apartments.

It would also include a commercial centre.
