Snargate Street in Dover evacuated due to suspected unexploded bomb

A stretch of road in Dover has re-opened after an unexploded bomb was discovered earlier this afternoon.

Police were called to Snargate Street at 12.20pm and the area was cordoned off as a precaution.

Bomb disposal teams arrived and contained the explosive.

The wartime shell is believed to have been unearthed by a JCB digger at a nearby excavation site.

The shell is understood to be one foot long.

A port spokesman confirmed the re-opening. He said: "The incident on Snargate Street has been stood down and the road has been reopened."

A police spokesman said: "The area was cordoned off as a precaution and people were evacuated from buildings in the immediate vicinity.

Dover TAP has been implemented, which will keep lorries waiting at the Western Heights roundabout until it is given the green light.

The traffic flow is being diverted through Union Street, across the promenade and onto the A20.
