Travellers in Russell Street car park, Dover, left the site on Sunday

A group of travellers who parked their caravans in the Russell Street car park left the site on Sunday according to the district council.

Residents complained that around 10 caravans were stationed across various parking bays since Tuesday and apparently did not receive any parking tickets.

One resident, who asked not to be named, uses the car park regularly and said that there was litter all over the floor, close to where the caravans were parked.

When the Mercury approached DDC about this on Thursday, a spokesman said: “We are aware of this group of caravans in Russell Street car park and we are taking appropriate steps to move them on.”

The police said they were not made aware of any “specific incidents” at the site.

Dover resident Linda Quick posted on Facebook: “What’s the betting if any of us parked there without paying we’d get slapped with a ticket immediately?”

When the Mercury spoke to DDC on Monday a spokesman added: “We did make a number of visits in line with legislative requirements, and can confirm that the group left on Sunday before any legal documents were served.”
