People with respiratory problems may be affected by high levels of pollution in east Kent today.

It has blown in from the near continent and includes Saharan dust.

Asthma sufferers may need to use their inhaler more often and people with lung problems should not exert themselves and reduce outdoor activity.

Dr Sotiris Vardoulakis, head of the air pollution and climate change group at PHE said: "While most people will not be affected by short term peaks in air pollution, some individuals, particularly those with existing heart or lung conditions, may experience increased symptoms.

"Anyone experiencing discomfort such as sore eyes, cough or sore throat should consider reducing activity, particularly outdoors."

Pollution levels are expected to return to normal by Saturday.
