Dover District Council releases warning following scam telephone calls

Residents are being warned not to fall for a council tax or benefits phone scam.

Dover District Council (DDC) confirmed that it had received reports that people were being asked for bank details to fund over payments.

A DDC spokesman said: "We are aware of a couple of incidents where residents have reported telephone calls from someone who said they were from the council stating that the resident was owed a council tax refund.

"The caller then asked for the person’s bank details."

"DDC stresses that we would NOT call someone and ask for bank or card details in this way.

"We are liaising with the police on this matter.

"In cases where anyone has handed over bank details, they are advised to contact the police immediately."
