Dover Athletic midfielder Nicky Deverdics adamant he scored winner against Boreham Wood

Dover midfielder Nicky Deverdics believes he was robbed of a goal after his captain Jamie Grimes claimed he had scored the winning goal from a Deverdics cross against Boreham Wood on Monday.

The former Newcastle United trainee, who is in his second season at Crabble, said: “He said he got the faintest of touches on it – he was the only one who thought that.

“I didn’t see him get anything on it – it went straight in. I was robbed.”

Had he been credited with the goal, that would have made it two in two games for Deverdics after his strike at Bromley on Saturday.

It would have also made him the leading scorer for Whites in this campaign with three but now he finds himself sharing that mantle with a defender, Grimes, and striker Stefan Payne.

He joked: “That’s embarrassing, being joint leading scorer with Grimesy. I don’t mind being up there with Stef but a defender, no way! Besides, Grimesy really didn’t score on Monday!”

Deverdics scored seven league goals last season but he hasn’t enjoyed as much success as those strikes brought this season.

He said: “Each time I scored, we won – that’s not a bad statistic. But this time around, my goals have just earned us a point because we lost at Barrow and drew at Bromley.

“Hopefully, that will change soon. I’d like to think so because we have been playing some good football.

“We just haven’t put games to bed that we all know we should have done and that has frustrated each and every one of us.

“But we’re unbeaten in six now, so that’s not a bad return.

“We just need to start stringing a few wins together now.”
