He started his career at Croydon, before joining Sutton United in 2009, scoring a hat-trick on his debut.

Payne then signed for Fulham in 2009 before Andy Hessenthaler signed him while he was boss of Gills in 2010.

Payne scored one goal in his time at Gills, in the 6–1 win at Hereford in 2011.

He then had spells at Braintree Town, Aldershot Town, Sutton United, Macclesfield Town and Ebbsfleet United before joining Hornchurch last year.
