Dover Athletic boss Chris Kinnear says he wants utilise striker Ricky Miller's commitment wisely

Chris Kinnear doesn’t want to change Ricky Miller’s playing style but says the striker must continue to work on keeping his cool.

Miller returned to Dover’s starting line-up on Saturday for the first time since he was sent off for two bookings against Boreham Wood on August 9 – a game which Whites led at the time, only to lose 4-1.

After impressive displays off the bench, Kinnear recalled Miller and Sammy Moore to the team at Southport and Whites won 1-0 to bounce back after consecutive defeats with Moore setting up the goal for Ricky Modeste.

Kinnear said: “It was not easy. Southport have been established in this division for a long time. We missed two or three chances which made it more difficult. We changed it around and made it a bit different. Rick was always going to come back at some stage.”

He added: “He did well but we brought him off because he’d been booked – for diving, which is ridiculous, he just fell over – and the ref said the next time he did anything he’d be off.

“All it would take was for one of their players to push or trip him and for him to react – we didn’t want a repeat of what happened against Boreham Wood.”

He added: “He’s learning and he’s getting better. He’s still young. You don’t want to take away that desire from him – he’s always going to give you 100% – but you don’t want him getting sent off because then the team suffers.”
