Former Gillingham forward Stefan Payne has left Dover Athletic to join League 1 Barnsley

Dover Athletic striker Stefan Payne has earned a move to League 1 side Barnsley.

The deal was announced on Wednesday by the South Yorkshire club who have have taken him on a free transfer. The striker has penned a two-year deal with the option of an additional year.

Payne, 24, enjoyed an outstanding campaign for Dover in the Vanarama National League, which included 23 goals and 11 assists, taking his goal-tally over the last three seasons to an impressive 75. He won the club's Golden Boot award this season and was also players' player.

Payne, speaking to Barnsley PlayerHD, said: “To have the opportunity to sign for a club like Barnsley, I’ve taken it with both hands. I like getting in behind, taking people on and scoring.”

Barnsley boss Paul Heckingbottom said: “Stefan is someone we’ve had our eye on for a while and he has all the right attributes as a striker. He’s scored a lot of goals over the past few seasons and will prove a good addition to our front-line in the future.”
