Dover Athletic assistant manager Jake Leberl reacts to home National League win over Chester

Jake Leberl admitted Dover had to make a few tactical adjustments to subdue initially dogged opponents Chester in the National League at Crabble on Saturday.

Giancarlo Gallifuoco's 21st minute header was all that separated the sides at half-time but Dover seized control in the second half, sealing a 4-0 win with further goals from Mitch Pinnock, Nortei Nortey and Mitch Brundle.

Assistant boss Leberl admitted that Chester's 3-5-2 formation had caused Dover problems in the first half leading the home side's management team to have a re-think.

He said: "It was a tough game, especially the first 25 minutes. We made a few changes and we struggled to get to grips with how they went, the personnel they played and what they did.

"We went through what we thought they'd do before the game and we couldn't quite get to grips with it because the left-back played a lot higher and wider.

"He was playing virtually as a left winger so we had to make a few adjustments, the lads got to grips with that and once we did we really grew into the game, started to get on top of them and scored four good goals.

"I thought our athleticism and fitness took its toll and the subs coming on (with their) fresh legs made a difference and we were worthy winners in the end.

"We were pleased not to concede early on in the first and second half because they had a little bit of impetus, but we defended really well.

"I thought all the boys at the back defended well and we have done generally this season. We're right up there in the goals against column which is pleasing.

"It's nice to get four goals because I think it's the first time this season we've scored more than two in a game."

Leberl said he felt the second goal - Pinnock's first in the league for Dover - was crucial and he hopes the former Tonbridge man continues to keep improving.

Pinnock is enjoying his longest run in the Whites first team and Leberl said: "Mitch has been with us quite a while and I think he's realising he needs to get his head down and live and breathe football.

"He's found himself in the team via how well he's been doing in training and I think he had an exceptional game. What he did there for his goal he's done in training ever since we've had him."

The win lifted Whites up to second, behind Aldershot on goal difference. They travel to struggling Guiseley next Saturday.
