Deal Pottery

potteryDid you know Deal used to have a pottery, on the site now occupied by The Builder Centre behind Albert Road?

Keen amateur photographer Peter Sullivan has loaned his old photos of the industrial area for this week’s Those Were The Days, the history page in the East Kent Mercury.

It was called Deal Art Pottery at the start of the 1900s and the land in that area has a seam of clay. There is still a pond, known locally as Potters’ Pond created by excavation of the clay for pottery.

Later the pottery began to make pipes, chimneys and other items for the building trade and the site was taken over by Castle Concrete and is now The Builder Centre.
