Dover Athletic won their first home game of the season at the
fifth attempt with a 2-1 victory over Tonbridge Angels in the FA
Cup second qualifying round on Saturday.
But Nicky Forster’s side had to endure some nervy moments,
especially in the second half, as Tonbridge recovered from a poor
start to enjoy more than their fair share of possession.
Dover dominated the first 20 minutes and could easily have led
by more than Ben May’s fifth-minute header after
a free-kick from Barry Cogan, pictured.
But Angels equalised on 26 minutes when George Purcell scored
against his former club and it was against the run of play when
Dover went back in front six minutes before the break through Danny
Webb following another Cogan free-kick.
Forster brought on his latest signing, midfielder Daryl McMahon
from Eastleigh, 13 minutes into the second half but it was
Tonbridge who looked the more likely to score.
Dover, however, clung on to record a much-needed success in
front of their home fans.
