Boatyard fire at Faversham's Iron Wharf being treated as suspected arson attack

A man has been arrested on suspicion of arson after eight boats were destroyed by fire in the early hours of this morning.

The suspect, who lives locally and is in his 30s, was taken into custody at about 9am - just hours after the blaze ripped through Iron Wharf in Faversham.

Emergency crews were called to the dry dock at 1.30am after the flames took hold.

He said: "Several fire engines woke me. I always worry about my shop so got dressed and investigated.

"Several boats and workshops were destroyed.

"I got moved on by police due to fears of exploding gas bottles. It was still raging/ and spreading when I left at 3am."

The ambulance service's Hazardous Area Response Team was also called, but no one was injured.

Police spokesman Vicki Foster said: "The fire is currently being treated as suspicious and a man in his 30s has been arrested on suspicion of arson and remains in custody at this time."

"An area of the wharf will remain closed to ensure public safety and while enquiries are made into the circumstances surrounding the fire."
