Faversham Town manager Ray Turner says club's young stars are not there for other clubs to tempt away

Bullish boss Ray Turner has hit out at Faversham’s rivals who he claims mistakenly think Town players are there for the taking.

Several Ryman League, Division 1 South sides have come calling for Town players in recent weeks, leading Turner to claim: “They think we are some sort of January sale.”

He admitted: “They might think we’ve lost a couple, there is blood in the water and that our players are there for the taking but that couldn’t be further from the truth.

“I am happy with where we are, what we’ve got and where we are going.”

After keeper Will Godmon rejected what Turner described as a substantial offer to join Hastings, midfielder George Monger was the next in line for an approach, from Hythe, although Turner says the former Dartford man will remain at Salters Lane.

Turner added: “We are not relinquishing our best young talent. We have invested time and energy into the development of these players and don’t want other teams to benefit from that.”

One player coming in to the club is 20-year-old forward Kieron Campbell, who joins from Whitstable as part of an agreement which saw Lilywhites’ 13-goal top scorer Stuart King sign for the Belmont club in time to score on his debut at Tooting on Saturday.

Turner said: “Kieron is young and quick and fits the mould of what we’re trying to do and how we’re trying to play.”

Campbell was cup-tied for Tuesday night’s 1-0 home win over Dorking which booked Town’s place in the semi-final of the Ryman League Cup.

Turner said: “It can be difficult to fit the competition into your priorities, particularly early in the season when you have the FA Cup and Trophy complete with the prize money they offer.

“However, in the new year, with a home quarter-final, you can’t fail to take it seriously and the chance of appearing in a cup final is a good reward. I wanted to get a game on to try and keep the momentum from our run of form which is now one defeat in 15.”

After Saturday’s postponement at South Park, sixth-placed Town return to Ryman League, Division 1 South action on Saturday with a trip to Corinthian Casuals.

Turner – whose side are only out of the play-off berths on goal difference – said: “It looks likely it will be on, in contrast to South Park, which is a question mark in August let alone January.

“They are one of the sides who have been battling for the play-off places but if we can win it would take us nine points clear of them.”
