Channel Tunnel fire: Services resumed but Eurotunnel and Eurostar passengers still facing delays

Passengers are being warned to expect delays on the Eurotunnel today after a fire over the weekend.

Long queues built up after a blaze on a lorry travelling through the north tunnel on Saturday, which caused power supply problems.

Today, part of one of the tunnels remains closed, causing waiting times of up to one hour for passengers using the Eurotunnel service from Folkestone.

Freight services are unaffected.

Meanwhile, on Eurostar services from Ashford, Ebbsfleet and St Pancras, there's also delays of up to an hour.

Thousands of passengers were affected by the delays over the weekend.

Services were suspended while fire crews dealt with the blaze, but resumed at 2.45pm yesterday.

Eurostar, which runs trains through the tunnel, said it planned to run a full service yesterday, "but only for passengers who have an existing reservation for this date".

A spokesman for Kent Police said on Saturday: "A lorry fire has led to the closure of both bores of the Channel Tunnel.

"The fire was at the French end of the tunnel and is being dealt with by the French authorities.

"The are no reported injuries. However, rail passengers are advised to expect significant delays whilst the vehicle is being recovered and fumes are cleared from the tunnel."

In a statement, operator Eurostar said on Saturday: "We are sorry but we are unable to run any further trains today because Eurotunnel has been closed due to smoke detected in the north tunnel.

"If you were planning to travel today, we advise you to postpone your journey and not to come to the station."

Eurostar's customer care number is 03432 186 186.
