Sam Pepper quits YouTube and Twitter: Social media prankster explains his videos did not reflect his "true persona"

A controversial YouTuber from Kent has quit the site saying he was "ashamed" over the online persona he created.

Sam Pepper, who is originally from Folkestone, was widely criticised in September 2014 and December 2015 over pranks he uploaded.

He also left just one tweet on his Twitter account - a video titled simply 'I'm sorry' which explains why he has quit.

The prank from December featured him faking a kidnap and execution of a fellow YouTuber prompting more than 200,000 people calling for the site to delete his account.

In September 2014 his 'Fake Hand Ass Pinch' video sparked a huge backlash and forced Pepper into an apology.

In the last six years, Pepper has gained a YouTube following of more than two million people worldwide.

He told his followers: "Even before YouTube I've always made pranks. I was mischievous and like making people laugh and was also like the class clown in school.

"I'm not telling you this for any sympathy or whatever. I'm in this situation because of me. It's my fault.

"Over the last few days I've disappeared from social media.

"I've never been at a point in my life where I've wanted to give up and stop doing something I love.

"YouTube is my life however lame that sounds."

In the video he said it was to "be honest for once" and 100% himself.

He added: "I was making myself look a douche to everyone and no wonder people hate me. I've been an idiot."

He said the fake pinch grab was the first time he made himself look "a massive douche".

"Of course I know in real life I can't do that, that's why I faked it and asked people before.

"I made up this story that it was a social experiment.

"I've been faking my whole online persona.

"My whole thought process was stupid.

"I want a second chance and prove to you to make content that represents me as a person and inspire."
