Youngsters told not to enter derelict buildings at Royal Victoria Hospital in Folkestone

Inquisitive youngsters are being warned not to trespass into a derelict hospital building because of the deadly cancer risk from asbestos.

Kent Police has issued the warning after explorers gained entry to a building at the Royal Victoria Hospital site in Folkestone.

Officers have spoken with the parents of a number of children who were found on the site earlier this week, and say they will step up their patrols over the weekend.

Sgt Maxine Harris from the Shepway Community Safety Unit said: “The site is extremely unsafe and there is an asbestos hazard which could have severe implications for people’s health.

“Entering the property could cause criminal damage and is also trespass, and action may be taken against those responsible.”

Asbestos has been linked with the deadly strain of cancer mesothelioma, so anyone who sees people acting suspiciously near the site is asked to call Kent Police on 101.
