Delays after train breaks down in Eurotunnel

Delays of up to six hours have been reported after a train broke down in the Eurotunnel.

The service, from Calais to Folkestone, stopped in the tunnel at about 5pm due to a malfunction - it was due in to Folkestone at 5.27pm.

After about two hours the train was evacuated and passengers were left waiting in the tunnel for a recovery train, which will take them back to Calais.

Passengers waiting in the tunnel said it was very hot but most were coping, and Eurotunnel staff gave out water.

As of 9pm people were still waiting for the recovery train to head back to France.

A passenger said people were holding up well, despite the long wait.

He told KentOnline: "Most seem ok and are talking in that British way where we ignore each other in public until there is a problem."

Eurostar and Le Shuttle services are both affected with delays of up to six hours reported for freight.

Only one line is currently available through the tunnel.

The problem is causing tailbacks on the M20 approach to the terminal, with a number of drivers stuck in traffic.
