Fundraisers hope to kick-start Leas Pavilion restoration project in Folkestone

Community fundraisers have launched an online bid to raise cash to begin restoring a derelict grade-II listed pavilion to its former glory.

Friends of Leas Pavilion in Folkestone has already won high profile support from Eastenders actor June Brown who plays Dot Cotton in the soap.

Now they are appealing for help to bring the pavilion back into use as a community hub to serve all of Folkestone, and aim to obtain ownership or a 100-year lease.

The pavilion has been derelict since 2010, and last year Shepway District Council granted planning permission for new flats to surround it.

The first phase of the project will be to raise £4,000 so that the group can apply for a Start Up grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund.

On the group’s Crowdfunder page they have set out what the money will be used for, with the need for surveys, legal advice, and business planning to bring success.

The group said: “Restoration will allow the Pavilion to play a part in the ongoing regeneration of Folkestone and become not only an asset to the community but also a visitor attraction.

“When the project is completed the building will have multiple uses for the local community, opening up the heritage to the maximum number of people.

“Our aim is to manage the restoration project and plan for the future heritage maintenance and economic viability of the Pavilion.”
