A statement by Highways England said initially the incident should have been cleared by around 4pm when traffic flow was expected to return to normal.

But workers managed to clear the lanes by about 3pm.

A tweet by Kent Police's Road Traffic Unit said: "M20 11a London bound- Assisting Longport patrols with a road traffic collision."

The accident happened not far from the scene of an earlier crash.
