The Wing at the Battle of Britain Memorial in Capel-le-Ferne nominated for Carbuncle Cup 2015

The Battle of Britain memorial in Kent has been nominated as the worst new building in the country.

The Wing at the Battle of Britain Memorial in Capel-le-Ferne, near Folkestone, has been put forward for the Carbuncle Cup - an award which recognises the newest architectural eyesores the country has to offer.

The museum was opened by The Queen in March this year.

Now in its 10th year, the cup is run by magazine Building Design and inspired by Prince Charles' comment when he described the proposed extension of London's National Gallery as a "monstrous carbuncle on the face of a much-loved and elegant friend".

Other nominees for this year's awards - set to embarrass architects and planners - include the 'Walkie Talkie' building in Central London and The M by Montcalm hotel in Shoreditch.

Anyone can nominate a building by giving a photo and reason as to why it is the worst in the country, and nine have made it onto this year's shortlist.

Malcolm Triggs, a spokesman for The Wing, said: "We find it quite amusing. Clearly it is a fantastic design.

"Everybody who we have spoken to loves it. The Queen is impressed and likes it.

"A random website has had a pop at it, it's not something we are taking too seriously. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion."

The Wing was one of ten buildings nominated, but did not make the list of the final six who were shortlisted.

The Carbuncle Cup winner for 2015 will be announced tomorrow.
