Man at Channel Tunnel had mortar bomb

A MAN is being quizzed by police after he was arrested for having a First World War mortar bomb at the Channel Tunnel.

A bomb disposal unit detonated the historic device in a controlled explosion last night.

The tunnel was closed during the security alert as Eurotunnel and Kent Police emergency action plans came in to force.

The man, aged in his 50s, who has not been identified, was taken to an unnamed police station for questioning.

The scare caused long delays for cross-channel commuters, with cars queuing on the coastbound M20 and a high-speed Eurostar train left stranded on the tracks outside Ashford.

The tunnel was re-opened later the same night, but travel problems continued.

A police spokesman said no further details of the incident would be released over the weekend, but inquiries continued.
