Kent MP hears fears from migrants in Calais as demolition date for the camp draws closer

A Kent MP has expressed concerns about the preparations the French are taking to dismantle the Calais migrant camp.

Folkestone and Hythe Conservative MP Damian Collins took a trip across the Channel yesterday to take a look at the conditions people there live in.

It was announced by French president Francois Hollande late last month branding the situation "unacceptable."

It is unclear where the migrants gathered at the camp will go but it is thought the government is planning to enforce some kind of dispersal scheme.

Mr Collins said it was expected that the camp would be dispersed by the end of this month.

His tweet said: "The concern in the camp is that the French authorities will just knock it down even if they haven't found places for the migrants to go.

"At the camp they are saying it could be closed by the end of October."

It is estimated about 10,000 people are living within the area, close to the Port of Calais.

Work has recently started on the construction of a huge concrete wall on the approach roads leading to the port, which is costing £17m and is being funded by the UK taxpayer.
