Police are hunting for a man who attempted to steal a woman's handbag in an alleyway near Rendezvous Street in Folkestone yesterday

A thief was tackled to the ground by members of the public after he snatched a handbag from a woman in Folkestone yesterday.

It is believed that a man swiped the bag from a woman in an alleyway near Rendezvous Street at around 11.40pm.

After hearing the commotion, concerned members of the public chased the man and tackled him to the floor, claiming the handbag back.

The suspect then ran off in the direction of the Old High Street and was last seen near the harbour.

Police are now appealing for anyone with information about the incident to get in touch.

The man is described as white, in his late 30s to late 40s, 5ft 8in tall and of thin build.

He has short dark hair, dark stubble and was wearing a dark coloured jacket with a zip up front and faded jeans.

He had distinctive bad teeth and small scars on his face.
