Motorcyclist Jason Milnes died on A20 Ashford Road in Newingreen after crashing into trailer and stationary lorry

A young and popular motorcyclist died after crashing into a trailer and a stationary lorry at “considerable speed”, an inquest heard.

Jason Edward Milnes, 26, who lived in Hythe, died when his white Honda bike was involved in a collision on the A20 Ashford Road in Newingreen on Friday, June 24.

The inquest, heard at Folkestone Magistrates’ Court yesterday, concluded that Mr Milnes died of a head injury and multiple other injuries.

Jason Milnes lived in Hythe and had a large group of friends.

Investigating officer Chris Oliver-Jones from the Kent Police Serious Collision Investigation Unit looked into the incident, which involved three vehicles on the 60mph stretch.

An Isuzu 4x4 towing an empty trailer was turning left into a farm and on the opposite side of the road a Volvo lorry was parked in a lay-by, where its driver had stopped for lunch.

Mr Oliver-Jones, who described the bike as having a “sporty look” to it, said: “From what I understand Mr Milnes was heading from Newingreen in the direction of Sellindge.

“He made contact with the rear of the trailer and then with the HGV on the other side of the road.”

One man who witnessed the crash, the driver of a minibus, pulled onto a grass verge anticipating that Mr Milnes would not have enough time to slow down.

"He did overtake at some considerable speed but we did not have enough information to conclude the speed" - serious collision investigator Robert Giles

He then saw the crash take place in his rear view mirror.

Mr Oliver-Jones added: “He could see that Mr Milnes would not be able to stop so he made the conscious decision to put himself off of the road.”

Serious collision investigator Robert Giles also gave evidence, confirming that the damaged bike was checked over by engineers and that there were no prior mechanical defects.

Mr Giles said: “He did overtake at some considerable speed but we did not have enough information to conclude the speed.

“The engineer said the bike was in good condition.

“There were considerable marks between the trailer and the Volvo parked up in the lay-by on the opposite site of the road.

“The right rear corner of the trailer was quite badly damaged - the motorcycle was passing but it wasn’t far away enough to clear it.”

Mr Giles confirmed that the bike careered across the road, under the Volvo and then it “bounced back” on itself, stopping by the trailer it initially hit.

Assistant coroner Kate Thomas recorded that Mr Milnes died as a result of a road traffic accident.

Miss Thomas said: “It was right to say that he was making his way along that road at some speed.

“But it was simply impossible to determine what that speed was.”
