A man has been charged following an incident in which two police officers were stabbed in Folkestone yesterday.

The 39-year-old man, Robert Jones, of St Michael's Street, was charged this afternoon after his arrest at the scene with two counts of Grievous Bodily Harm with intent.

He appeared before Folkestone Magistrates today and was remanded in custody until his next appearance on Monday January 27.

A witness said around 10 police officers arrived along with social workers, but were refused entry to the property in St Michael's Street.

The two male officers were executing a warrant, believed to be under the Mental Health Act, at the property when they were injured.

Both the officers needed hospital treatment and required stitches to knife wounds.

One suffered a stab wound to his face and the other was slashed across the face.

A police spokesman said the pair had been taken to hospital for treatment to minor stab wounds. They were discharged later yesterday afternoon.

A witness, who wished to remain anonymous, said: "One was stabbed and one was cut across the face.

"There was quite a lot of noise coming from the property. I know they wouldn't let the officers in.

"We then saw two officers come running out covered in blood."

They added: "He's lived here for at least 18 months to two years and never really had any trouble from him. The property is going to be boarded up."

Officers and a forensics team remained outside the house during the afternoon while they carried out investigations.
