Warning issued by Shepway District Council over hoax calls made to residents in Folkestone, Hythe and Romney Marsh about council tax payments

Residents in Shepway are today being warned after the district council was alerted to several hoax calls received over council tax payments.

Shepway District Council said the calls involve people being asked to reveal their bank details.

But the council added this would never be something council staff would ask over the telephone.

A statement from the council said: "Some people in Shepway have been receiving hoax calls, allegedly from Shepway District Council, asking for them to reveal their bank details in relation to their council tax.

"A genuine SDC caller will never ask you to reveal your bank details over the telephone.

"If you are ever unsure, tell the caller you will phone them back."

Anyone with concerns over receiving such calls are asked to call the council on 01303 858660 and the request will then be directed to the relevant department to confirm if the call was genuine.
