What to do in Folkestone, Hythe and Romney Marsh this weekend

As the weather is still expected to be good (although not the sweltering heat of earlier this week), we look what you could get up to with the family in Shepway this weekend.

Whether it's to keep yourself entertained or with the children, here's five things you could do:

1) Armed Forces Day, The Leas, Folkestone - Saturday 11am-4.30pm

This free event on The Leas by the bandstand is to commemorate the country's armed services. Displays will take place from serving personnel and cadets throughout the day while there will also be exhibitions of military vehicles.

Highlights include: Princess of Wales Royal Regiment freefall parachute display team - The Tigers - who will drop on to the Leas between 11.30am and 12.30pm (depending on the weather); Tug of War between sea, army and air cadets at approximately 2pm.

2) Blessing of the Fisheries, St Peter's Church and The Stade, Folkestone - Sunday 3pm

Dating back more than 120 years, it is one of the most colourful traditions in the Folkestone calendar. The procession involves dozens of schoolchildren to bless and thank the sea and those who work at sea.

The procession meets at 2.45pm before setting off from the church at 3pm.

Norman Banks, Bishop of Richborough, will led the service to bless the fishing fleet and the fisheries and address the crowds on the harbour.

3) World Giraffe Day, Port Lympne Reserve, near Hythe - Saturday (open 10am) and Sunday (open 9.30am) last admission 3.30pm

Celebrate World Giraffe Day at the reserve over the weekend with a host of giraffe-themed activities.

Throw on your giraffe onesie (come on, everyone's got one haven't they?), get your face painted and take part in loads of games and events around the reserve and help raise awareness of giraffe conservation. There are estimated to be just 2,500 mature adults left in the wild.

Meet giraffe keepers to find out more about the reserve's herd of eight giraffe including two babies born just last year.
