Long-serving Folkestone RFC player Dave Baxter has been forced to retire because of injury.

Baxter, in his final season with the club, tore his Achilles tendon and broke his ankle during Folkestone’s win over Gillingham Anchorians last month.

The Stones No.8 had surgery but was told he wouldn’t be able to play again in 2014-15, bringing his playing career to a premature end.

Folkestone coach Leigh Fitchie said: "It’s been taken out of his hands and he’s devastated, as is everyone in the squad and the whole club. Dave’s been playing for this club for 20-odd years.

"He was giving it his all this season and playing the best rugby he’s played for a few years. But the pleasing thing is that he still wants to be part of the squad, he wants to help at training and come to games.

"He’s such a senior figure at Folkestone and the junior guys will learn from his advice and what he’s got to say.

"You always want players like Dave helping out and mentoring. Although he won’t be playing any more, he’s still got a big role to play this season."

Folkestone are fifth in London 3 South East with two wins and a loss against their name so far.

They're at home to Uckfield on Saturday, kick-off 3pm.
