Folkestone Invicta boss Neil Cugley admits loaning Charley Robertson from Maidstone United didn't work well

Charley Robertson has returned to Maidstone United after finishing a loan spell at Folkestone which manager Neil Cugley admitted didn’t work for anyone.

The 18-year-old midfielder made just two appearances during his month-long stay with Invicta and Stones boss Jay Saunders last week criticised the way the teenager was treated by the Ryman League Division 1 South club.

Robertson started against Merstham and Walton & Hersham in the first two games of his loan spell but didn’t feature again after that. He travelled to Guernsey but was left on the bench and he wasn’t even in the matchday squad for Folkestone’s league games against East Grinstead, Hastings and Carshalton.

Saunders said: "Folkestone haven’t used him in the right way – he’s not been treated great.

"Charley only played two games and I’m disappointed with that. He went there to get sharp but, if anything, it’s set him back."

Cugley said: "I can’t argue with what Jay says and I have to take full responsibility. We weren’t playing all that well when he came to us and the lad didn’t play that well in those two games. I’d been told he was a player who would take the game to the opposition and excite me but that just didn’t happen.

"Jordan Wright has been an absolute revelation for us – getting us forward far quicker from midfield and getting our forwards more involved. There was no way I could have left him out with the way he was playing.

"Charley lives in Bromley and doesn’t drive. I’ll admit that getting him down here has been difficult. I underestimated just how big a problem that would prove to be.

"They clearly think a lot of him at Maidstone and he’s a nice lad with a lot of ability. Sadly, it’s just not worked out for him with us."
