Memories of performing with Hollywood actress Gemma Arterton as children in Bugsy Malone were rekindled as The Voice contestant Adam Barron returned to his old school.

The pair appeared together in the joint production between the Gravesend boys and girls grammar schools.

Gemma has gone onto a glittering career as a Bond girl, among other roles, while Adam had to wait longer for his break in the hit TV talent show.

The 27-year-old returned to his alma mater to chat with children after being ousted from the programme, despite being coached by singing legend Sir Tom Jones.

Adam, who also attended Cobham Primary School, visited the school after being told an old teacher had put up posters in the staff room about him being on The Voice.

He sent them an email thanking them for support and they invited him in.

After speaking to Years 7 and 8, Adam said: “There were really interesting questions.

"I was expecting ‘What was Jessie J like’, but they asked me how it all worked, how much time I had to spend with the mentors, what my plan is now, how I coped with my nerves.

"I really enjoyed it. It was nice to share my experiences with some kids who are in the same shoes I was 17 years ago when I first started at the school.

“The school is where it all started, really.

“It was nice to speak to the students and my advice was all cliche, like follow your dreams – but it is actually true.

“I said if they were passionate about something, then they should go after it because it is so rewarding doing something you love.

“It has taken a long time for me to get anywhere with it, but it was worth it. It might not be financially rewarding and you might not have a flashy car or house, but you will be happy.

“My first ever performance at the school was in Bugsy Malone, which was a joint production with the girls’ grammar school. I only had a small part, but the girl playing Tallulah is now quite famous herself – it was Gemma Arterton.”

Adam is now working part-time so he can continue with his music.
