Gravesham lands second place in South East in Bloom competition

After leaving rivals in the dirt last year, Gravesham just missed out on securing the top spot in this year's South East in Bloom competition.

Today the borough was handed the silver glit award in the contest, which judges the best decorated town centres in the area.

The area secured second place after planting tens of thousands of flowers, knitted decorations around trees, a scarecrow competition, street art and a huge clear-up campaign around the town centre in a seaside theme.

Gravesend's Windmill Hill also won a bronze award for their first-time efforts in the small parks category.

Communities director Melanie Norris, who coordinated the Gravesham in Bloom project, said: "It is a brilliant result and everyone concerned should be very proud of the achievement. Each year the judging is increasingly exacting and to take silver gilt is really good in a year in which I felt we all put on an even better effort.

"I’m sure we have sown the seeds for even greater things next year."

Council leader Cllr John Cubitt added: “I must pay tribute to the hundreds of volunteers, community groups, and council staff who worked so tirelessly on a fantastic scheme which brightened up the town for the summer and continues to add colour even now.

"Gravesham in Bloom has undoubtedly cheered up all who have seen it and I’m sure everyone would want me to thank all the unsung heroes who brought this about."
