Burglars steal silverware and set fire to church in Northfleet

Churchgoers were left devastated after thieves stole communion silverware and set fire to the vestry at St Mark's Church in Northfleet.

Assistant priest Fr. Michael Payne discovered the aftermath of the burglary at the church in London Road yesterday morning and called police.

He said the thieves had broken into the church safe and stolen the communion cup and plate before setting the vestry on fire.

Both items of silverware are believed to be Victorian, and were decorated with ornate Latin inscriptions.

Fr Payne said many of the congregation were very upset, but added: "It's been a horrible experience but there's been a large number of offers of help."

Police said inquiries are ongoing.
