Gravesham’s longest running choir is seeking new members to boost its sound.

The Marlowe Singers have been singing together since 1982 and with rehearsals for this term just started, the group is keen to hear some fresh new voices.

The all female melodic ensemble is no stranger to the spotlight, having featured on the BBC One documentary series ‘When I Get Older’, as well as performing in concerts around the county.

The choir rehearses in the St Andrew’s Arts Centre, in Royal Pier Road , Gravesend.

Choir secretary Jane Self said: “It’s just really enjoyable. I think people will have a lot of fun making music together and there is good social side too.

“There are quite a few people that have been here since the beginning, but it’s always nice to see new members join.

“We’re an all ladies choir at the moment, but if enough men joined we’d like that too.”

People of all ages are welcome to join. A range of both contemporary and traditional songs are performed at each session.

Members will be in expert hands with each rehearsal led by choir director Norman Blow, who also directs The Brook concert orchestra in Rochester.

Soprano Mrs Self has been with the choir for 31 years and has no intention of giving up her song book any time soon.

The primary school music teacher said: “It’s the challenge of learning new music and working and performing together that I really enjoy about the choir.

“We’ve had quite a few concerts over the years. We often get asked to perform at charity concerts, which we always accept.

“It’s hard to remember a favourite performance, but whenever we perform Vivaldi’s Gloria it has always been memorable.”

Membership for the Marlowe Singers is £35 for three months, covering hall costs and the director’s fee.
